Bluecoat Archive

Rooms to Live included a section relating to Captain Beefheart's first ever solo exhibition of paintings, held at Liverpool's Bluecoat in 1972 and a later celebration in 2017. As well as photographs of the paintings and related documentation, the archive section included: drawings and a film by the Bluecoat’s Blue Room inclusive arts programme for learning disabled artists
It also included a new suite of black ink drawings by artist Bryan Biggs - made in response to documentation in the archive; paintings from the early 1970s, inspired by the music of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band by the renowned graphic designer Malcolm Garrett*; the film ‘Beefheart on the Beach’ by artist Alan Dunn; and a short filmed recollection from curator Lucy Cullen who organised the original Bluecoat exhibition in 1972.

* ‘Electricity’; ‘A Badge for Every Day of the Week’; and ‘Rainbow Trout’, all gouache and fluorescent poster paints on paper, 1974. Loaned by the artist.
