The Mamas of Dada

'Old Farts At Play'* - Jon Gardner and David Wilkinson, ex of Mamas of Dada, took over the Trout House for an extended improvised performance inspired by Captain Beefheart, Walter Benjamin’s messianic time, and trying to find a liveable future alongside the birds. Featuring a specially constructed new instrument: the Neon Meate Octahorn.**

Mamas of Dada were a post-punk band active between 2003-2007. Lovers of modernism, the grotesque and early purveyors of what’s become known as ‘acid communism’, the highlight of their existence was probably a notorious gig above a dentist’s surgery in Withington, Manchester, which they feel sure opened a portal to another dimension.
David Wilkinson of the Mamas also has a podcast on display as part of the 'Rooms to Live' exhibition. 'Sweet Sweet Bulbs: Beefheart, Post Punk and Utopia' explores the link between the 1960s counterculture and the post-punk movement. David looks at musical connections, the idea of rock music as art, and the utopian energies of this era; the way it was driven by dreams of a better world.

* ‘Old Fart at Play’’ was the second to last track on Trout Mask Replica.
