Bryan Biggs

Bryan launched and closed the exhibition with DJ sets made in response to Vanda Chan’s Arcadia and Beefheart and the Magic Band’s Trout Mask Replica.

Bryan is Director of Cultural Legacies at Bluecoat, Liverpool’s Centre for Contemporary Art, where he has curated exhibitions and events over four decades, working with artists at the intersection of visual art, literature, music and performance, with an emphasis on issue-based, culturally diverse and collaborative practice. His current focus is on exploring echoes of Bluecoat’s heritage, including the transatlantic slave trade, in the present, and artists exploring marine imaginaries in port cities.
He has edited and coedited many publications including Art in a City Revisited (2008), Liverpool City of Radicals (2011), Bluecoat, Liverpool: The UK’s first arts centre (2020) and two collections of essays on Wirral-born writer Malcolm Lowry. He is a fine art graduate of Liverpool Polytechnic and since 2012 has done a drawing every day (Instagram: @ink_and_spit).

A mixed-tape cassette produced by Bryan, ‘Arcadians Are We’ (3hrs, 3mins, 2021) was also included in the Vanda Chan Archive in the gallery.
