Sweet Sweet Bulbs: Beefheart, Post Punk and Utopia

Mp3 podcast, 21mins. 2024.

A short extract from ‘Sweet Sweet Bulbs: Beefheart, Post Punk and Utopia’, a DIY podcast-style recording by Dr David Wilkinson, author of Post-Punk, Politics and Pleasure in Britain and Senior Lecturer in English at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The podcast explores the links between Captain Beefheart, the 1960s counterculture and the post-punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s. David looks at musical connections, the idea of rock music as art and the utopian energies of this era; the way it was driven by dreams of a better world.

Of the recording's rough sound quality, David claims: 'I wanted it to sound like those spontaneous taped interludes on Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica. I was also inspired by a quote from Mark E. Smith of cult Prestwich post-punk band The Fall. He once said that The Fall's music was roughly recorded because he wanted to encourage listeners to work at making sense of it. I love this idea and I think it's more relevant than ever now that our attention spans have come under attack by digital culture and social media.'
